Find the right fit

When to use it

Use this format when you want to gather focused feedback on team practices, behaviors, and processes after a sprint.

When to choose another format

Do not use this format if the team is still facing major issues or conflicts that need to be addressed separately.

Questions that guide the conversation

Use these prompts to collect specific observations. One idea per note keeps the discussion easy to follow.

Start

What new practices should we try next sprint?

Example cards

  • Implement pair programming sessions with the QA team for better collaboration.
  • Organize daily standups to ensure alignment and quick updates.
  • Introduce a dedicated time for code reviews before the end of the sprint.

Stop

What is taking up time or hindering results?

Example cards

  • Stop running meetings without clear agendas to make better use of time.
  • Eliminate unnecessary back-and-forths in the code review process.
  • Avoid last-minute changes to requirements that lead to confusion.

Continue

What is working well and should be maintained?

Example cards

  • Continue using the agile board for effective task tracking.
  • Maintain regular feedback loops with QA for better product quality.
  • Keep having end-of-sprint demos to showcase completed work.

From reflection to a next step

Make the next step small enough to happen

A specific observation

Team members feel overwhelmed by current processes and unclear on priorities.

A clear experiment

Assign one team member to streamline the code review process by implementing a checklist. Evaluate the effectiveness by measuring the average code review time after the next sprint.

Make the conversation useful

  • Encourage open and honest discussions to create a safe environment.
  • Use examples to guide conversations about each category.
  • Make sure everyone has a chance to contribute, especially quieter members.

Before you start

What if our team disagrees on an item?

Openly discuss the disagreement and try to find common ground. If needed, vote on the item to reach a conclusion.

How do we ensure action items are followed up?

Assign specific owners to each action item and review progress in the next retrospective.

Can we use this format for a large team?

This format is best for small to medium teams; for larger teams, consider breaking into smaller groups.

What if we identify too many items to work on?

Focus on the top 3-5 items per column to avoid overwhelming the team.
